Bacterial division machinery
- Septosome
- A 3D model of the division machinery at the end of the process (hypothesis of a discontinuous structure). It only includes FtsZ (in orange and blue), FtsA (yellow, purple and blue), ZapA tetramer (red), ZipA (brown). The DNA is represented with the hexameric translocase FtsK (blue). The model clearly raises the question of the Z-ring flexibility limit, i.e. which Z-ring architecture accommodates the mechanical deformation from a large ring (800 nm diameter) (see the Z-ring model) to a very small one (of the size of FtsK, 13 nm). Making the difference between a continuous or a discontinuous architecture seems a key element in understanding how the ring is able to exhibit a large range of flexibility. One hypothesis is that ZapA (red tetramer) inserts regularly inside the filaments “breaking” the ring. FtsZ monomer has been created from crystallographic data (PDB 1W59), cytoplasmic FtsA from PDB 1E4F, ZapA from PDB 1W2E, FtsK from PDB 2IUS and 2J5P. This model has been created from Bigot et al (PMID: 15522074) and Dubarry & Barre (PMID: 20033058).
